  18. Description of Working Group:
  19. The Network Information Center (NIC) maintains the central NICNAME
  20. database and server, defined in RFC 954, providing online look-up of
  21. individuals, network organizations, key nodes, and other information
  22. of interest to those who use the Internet.  Other distributed
  23. directory information servers and information retrieval tools have
  24. been developed and it is anticipated more will be created.  Many sites
  25. now maintain local directory servers with information about
  26. individuals, departments and services at that specific site.
  27. Typically these directory servers are network accessible.  Because
  28. these servers are local, there are now wide variations in the type of
  29. data stored, access methods, search schemes, and user interfaces.  The
  30. purpose of the Whois and Network Information Lookup Service (WNILS)
  31. Working Group is to expand and define the standard for WHOIS services,
  32. to resolve issues associated with the variations in access and to
  33. promote a consistent and predictable service across the network.

  37.      Done Review and approve the Charter making any changes deemed necessary.  
  38.           Examine the particular functional needs for expanded whois directory 
  39.           service. Begin work on a framework for recommendations.  Assign 
  40.           writing assignments for first draft of document.

  42.      Done Post the Whois and Network Information Lookup Service Recommendations
  43.           document as an Internet-Draft.

  45.    May 93 Submit the Whois and Network Information Lookup Service 
  46.           Recommendations document to the IESG as an Informational document.

  48.    Jun 93 Post the revised WHOIS protocol and index service document to the 
  49.           IESG as an Internet Draft.

  51.    Sep 93 Submit a revised WHOIS protocol specification and index service 
  52.           document to the IESG for consideration as a Draft Standard.
